The Center for Intensive English Studies

Founded in 1980, The Center for Intensive English Studies (CIES) has educated thousands of students who strengthened their English language skills to:

• prepare for full-time study at English-speaking universities
• prepare for successful careers that required English fluency
• return to their countries with strong English skills

Part of the mission of The Center for Intensive English Studies is to assess the English Speaking ability of potential international Teaching Assistants and scholars. If the speaking proficiency of the international graduate student does not reach the required Florida State standards, CIES provides a series of credit-bearing courses that will develop one’s spoken English, one’s presentation skills, and one’s cultural knowledge for successful teaching at an American university.

CIES is an integral part of the mission of The Graduate School as we seek to ensure that the high standards for our Teaching Assistants, both international and domestic, are adhered to.
